Description: Psalm was inspired by Celan's poetry, spoken aloud by the performers as part of the texture of the central movement. Throughout the piece, motifs that suggest Jewish prayers occur in musical contexts that suggest the rhythms and inflections of speech, mostly not tonal in the first two movements, but resolving into a strongly rhythmic, middle-eastern modal vocabulary in the final, illustrative movement. Illustrating visual and verbal imagery is also central the the cycle of short pieces based on fragments from Anne Michaels' novel about a Polish Jewish boy, a fugitive from the Nazis. The aphoristic character pieces draw from various pianistic conventions of the 20th century, as well as allusions to Beethoven and Brahms, whose music features in the story. The cello and piano Psalm, unrelated to the other, balances expressions of despair and security drawn from the Psalms of David in an unbroken arch of shifting moods and eloquent, impassioned exchanges of yearning entreaty and prayerful thankfulness between the two instruments. Auritus Quartet, Gilead Mishory (piano), Julius Berger (cello).
