Description: Hungary's first opera (and still regularly performed there) was first performed in 1861. Its strongly national theme - valiant Hungarian governor fighting evil German queen in the 13th century - allowed Erkel to use authentic Hungarian folk melody (the score includes a cimbalom and viola d'amore) to set against contemporary German music styles. Qualiton and Hungaroton each have recorded this work but this re-issue from Teldec is the first release at budget-price. 2 CDs. No libretto. Andrea Rost (soprano), Eva Marton (contralto), Dénes Gulyás, Atilla Kiss B. (tenors), Lajos Miller (baritone), Honvéd Male Chorus, Hungarian National Chorus, Orchestra for the Hungarian Millenium; Tamás Pál. Original 2004 release.
