PHILIP GATES (b.1963): Piano Quintet, A Garland for Gatsby for Piano, The Lake Isle for Oboe and Piano.
Catalogue Number: 12L098
Description: Garland is an 18-movement suite illustrating important events and characters in F. Scott Fitzgerald's 'The Great Gatsby'. The entirely tonal score recalls salonesque piano music of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with episodes redolent of the elegance of the Jazz Age of the 1920s in which the book is set. The piano quartet is a straightforwardly neo-romantic work with a sonata-form first movement, a tranquil and melodic slow movement with a song-like theme, and a lively tarantella finale. The Lake Isle is inspired by Yeats' poem of longing for a never to be forgotten natural idyll in the midst of everyday life; wistful, plaintive outer sections frame a consoling pastoral at the heart of the piece. Carducci Quartet, Andrew Knights (oboe), Philip Gates (piano).
