Description: This ensemble of winds, brass, piano and bass (founded in 1972 by composer Andriessen) performs minimalist classics in arragements (Reich and Adams); Riley's score does not specify instruments while the only new work here, Gann's 2005 Katrina piece has a first movement, "Before", which is pure fun New Orleans Mardi Gras, a stylised portrait of the energy and harmonic language of the music of Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong, and Bix Beiderbecke. The much longer second movement, "After" is a kind of interrupted chaconne. Successive variations suggest stages related to the Hurricane Katrina tragedy: grief, outrage, nostalgia and acceptance. 2 CDs. Orkest de Volharding; Jussi Jaatinen.
