Description: Following a neo-romantic period and one of more modern exploration, Laurusas settled on a style that synthesizes these trends in a freely expressive vocabulary that emphasizes emotional content above all. The three-movement cello concerto 'Emotional Conversation' exemplifies this method; the solo line is lyrically flexible, the accompanying dialogue richly colorful and harmonically warm, with a sense of dramatic narrative; melodies especially frequently stray into frankly tonal territory, though the vocabulary as a whole encompasses an advanced, though mostly not particularly dissonant harmonic vocabulary. Lyrical dialogue is also central to the cello duo Concento di corde, a work of great dramatic tension and considerable virtuosity in the vigorous second movement. The very recent (2009) Madrigale is described as incorporating some element of improvisation within a precisely determined structure; the material of which the piece is composed is firmly grounded in tonality, though with eloquently expressive instrumental interjections in the manner of lamenting cries and emotional outbursts. The Concerto da camera is a richly textured dialogue between a solo cello and an ensemble of his peers, the homogeneity of texture offset by the lyrical expressiveness of which the instruments are amply capable. David Geringas (cello).
