Description: This Dutch Romantic's music is attractively conservative, beginning with his first orchestral work, telling the tale of an outlaw's sea-battle with two sea monsters in music which follows in the traditions of Mendelssohn, Schumann and Brahms. Wagnerian harmonies and rhythms inhabit the 1894 Intermezzo and Wagenaar's mature style is present by 1902's Summer of Life, full of exuberant melodic flow while the dramatic subject of Saul and David (1906) allows for some tortured chromaticisms and a more abrasive orchestration. The Taming of the Shrew (1909) is probably Wagenaar's best-known work through historical recordings from various Dutch orchestral sources and acts as a boisterous introduction to this disc. Northwest German Philharmonic; Antony Hermus.
