Description: Leighton's 1974 symphony is a requiem for his recently deceased mother, but a secular requiem: the texts used are mostly of English metaphysical poets (Donne, Herbert, Traherne, Henry King). One of his more eloquent and visceral works, where the romantic tradition has the upper hand on his style, it is an acknowledgement of that time when, in our middle 40s or so, we realize that death is also hurtling towards us, faster every year. The 1964 Te Deum is a brilliant and thrilling example of this celebratory genre. Texts included. Sarah Fox (soprano), BBC National Chorus and Orchestra of Wales; Richard Hickox.
