Description: The concerto is a most attractive work, which, typically of Madsen's output, is thoroughly tonal and Romantic in outlook. Echoes of Shostakovich and Sibelius are present, alongside the unmistakable influence of the Strauss horn concertos and earlier classical and romantic models. The sonata is similarly indebted to classical antecedents - in this case predominantly Schubert, with a similarly memorable melodic contour and subtle modulations and metamorphosis of familiar material providing forward motion. The trio and quintet suggest a natural companionship with Brahms and Mozart respectively, while never quoting directly nor pastiching their styles; the idiom is always Madsen's own. The romantic warmth of the one and the sprightly formal ingenuity of the other are unmistakable, though, alongside occasional wry touches of humor and occasional, eyebrow-raising jazz-derived twists of harmony. This humor is given free rein in the two short occasional pieces, the one based on a folk tune, the other a lighthearted Mozart homage, with concealed quotations. Christoph Eß (horn), Boris Kuznetsov (piano), Trio Tricolor), Zemlinsky Quartet, Timo Steininger (second horn).
