Description: A Daina is a form of Latvian folk poetry and/or music; these pieces would just as aptly be called Preludes. Composed over a long period (1923-62) they have a remarkable degree of stylistic consistence even if harmony evolves with the times and the later works are leaner, angular and more concentrated than the earlier ones. Most of the first half or so have a modal quality inherited from Latvian folksong while later ones are more chromatic. Rachmaninov, Scriabin and Grieg are all important influences in what often seem like mini tone-poems which roll along with passionate lyricism and often epic sweep. No one interested in the byways of Late Romanticism will want to miss this release. Jonathan Powell (piano).
