Description: This Rouse series continues with two of what the composer calls his "death-centered" works of the early 1990s: the concerto (1993) whose five movements have two Irish folk-influenced outer ones, a second movement march and a fourth based on Scottish and Irish jigs which enclose a long elegy inspired by the kidnapping and torture-murder of two-year-old James Bulger by two ten-year-old boys in Liverpool. The symphony of 1994 flows entirely from its opening motifs which Rouse converts from effervescence in the first movement to something malevolent in the finale which follows a second movement threnody in memory of the sudden death in a car accident of his friend and fellow composer Stephen Albert. Rapture (2000) is a commission from the Pittsburgh Symphony which begins in a mood of warm serenity and gradually builds in dynamics to a brilliant, affirmative finale. Sharon Bezaly (flute), Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra; Alan Gilbert.
