DAVID MASLANKA (b.1943): Symphony No. 3, THOMAS SLEEPER (b.1956): Trumpet Concerto.
Catalogue Number: 11J109
Description: Sleeper's concerto is attractive and characterful, exploring a variety of relationships between soloist and ensemble; now dramatically virtuosic with accompaniment, now integrated into a lyrical and melodic dialogue, now a gleeful romp for both. Tonal and harmonically warm and rich, and with great rhythmic vitality, this is a very appealing concerto somewhat in the mold of a divertimento. Maslanka's symphony is another hugely impressive musical canvas. Tonal and espousing as strong a sense of harmonic progression as one might wish, the entire 45-minute structure suggests an exhilarating journey through strange and exalted landscapes. The composer's sense of color is extraordinary; every possibility offered by the resources of winds and percussion is fully explored along the way with great originality, while never resorting to anything suggesting gratuitous experimentation. Luminous and vital, this is music which continues to resound long after its final echoes have vanished. Craig Morris (trumpet), Frost Wind Ensemble at the University of Miami; Gary Green.
