Description: The rich lyricism and chromatic complexity shown in the piano concertos and solo piano pieces on the two Hyperion discs devoted to Stojowski are also present throughout this recital of cello works. The 1894 sonata actually has a more demanding part for the piano than for the cello, whose work is predominantly cantabile and lyrical (probably because the piece was dedicated to Paderewski). The Concertstück, an orchestral work from 1914, is performed in its cello/piano version (the orchestral score is unavailable and, in any event, there are variances between the two scores, the cello/piano version not having been published until 1922). The Fantaisie is a cello adaptation of a 1953 viola transcription by Mieczyslaw Szaleski of the trombone original (1905) while the Romance is the work of a Stojowski in his mid-teens. Jaroslaw Domzal (cello), Joanna Lawrynowicz (piano).
