THÉODORE DUBOIS (1837-1924): Works for Piano and Strings, Vol. 2 - Piano Quartet in A Minor, Quintet for Piano, Violin, Oboe, Viola and Cello.
Catalogue Number: 11J056
Reference: ACD2 2385
Description: The 70-year-old Dubois' piano quartet starts off sounding like Vierne - troubled, dark, a first movement full of racing anxiety - and the second movement provides little relief. Suddenly, the years and cares drop away in the third movement Allegro leggiero and a bright, bustling finale wraps up a happy ending. From 1905, the quintet is quite unusual in its use of an oboe, which takes the tessitura of the second violin in a normal piano quintet and whether it's the pastoral character of the reed instrument or the general intent of the composer, this is a much more relaxed work throughout. Trio Hochelaga, Jean-Luc Plourde (viola), Philippe Magnan (oboe).
