Description: The work of a 70-year-old composer, the 360 Preludes are perhaps meant as a summation of a life of writing music. The concept is a stroke of humor - the number of degrees in a “circle of fifths” is 360 - and the work takes an hour and forty-six minutes in this recording while covering a stylistic range from the Empfindsamkeit of C.P.E. Bach to anticipations of Schumannian Romanticism. The Grande Sonate, 21 minutes in three movements, may be Hässler’s largest-scale work and is worthy of comparison to Haydn’s best sonatas. 2 CDs for the price of 1. Vitlaus von Horn (piano).
