Description: Both these sonatas, the three-movement First of 1893 lasting 25 minutes and the four-movement Second of 1911 (34 min.), are absolutely chock-full of the memorable melodies, infectious rhythms and dashes of Slavic folk music which you'll recall from Stojowski's suite for orchestra and his violin concerto (the latter was coupled with the Second Sonata back in 2009 on this same label). Many of the items we offer are "worthy reclamations" but some just instantly show that they're in a higher category and these sonatas are a good example, reminding us that Stojowski was a "famous name" in Europe and in this country from around 1900 until the Second World War. Irena Kalinowska-Grohs (violin), Barbara Pakura (piano).
