Description: The most interesting thing about the first two of these quartets (from 1945 and 1963) is how certain traits in them which we consider to be Shostakovichian - like the extreme economy of means in the Fifth or some particular textures or snippets of actual notes in the Ninth - occur here years before they do in the more famous composer. And the Fourteenth (1978), managing to be both close to the vest as regards the music's character and yet with many instances seemingly painful and/or despondent, "seems to be imagining the kind of creative journey Shostakovich might have taken had he still been alive" as note-writer David Fanning puts it.
