Description: This was the last orchestral work Rózsa wrote, taking him from 1980-84 because of ongoing work on film scores. While his orchestral works tend not to sound like film scores, they do sound like music by a 20th century Hungarian composer, imbued with national characteristics reminiscent of Kodály and Bartók, dark in color with rhythmic intensity and surging melodies. Serly's 1949 completion of Bartók's concerto and his own Rhapsody, making use of folk songs from the latter's For Children, are still rarely recorded (only a 12-year-old Naxos exists). Lawrence Power (viola), Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra; Andrew Litton.
