Description: These symphonies come, chronologically, in pairs (and the P numbers are chronological): two from the early 1790s, two from somewhere between 1801 and 1804 and two from around 1818. The latter are, not surprisingly, the most striking - very much in the style of the Haydn London symphonies. And I mean "very much"; your attention will be gripped immediately, especially by the B flat symphony, and you'll wonder how these two symphonies were so completely forgotten. The earlier symphonies are still working in the late Mozart, late Haydn orbit, with slightly less memorable themes, slightly less rhythmic acuity, but still I'd say they're far better than around half of the symphonies on the long-running Chandos "Contemporaries of Mozart" series. The performances are sizzling, apparently using valveless horns with a modern orchestra playing in a "period" style. 2 CDs. Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana; Howard Griffiths.
