GEORGE ENESCU (1881-1955): Strigoii (Ghosts) for Vocal Soloists and Orchestra (orch. Sabin Păuța [b.1943]), Pastorale fantaisie for Orchestra (World Premiere Recordings.).
Catalogue Number: 09U045
Description: Written in 1916 and setting a complete poem by Romantic Romanian poet Mihai Eminescu (1850-1889), this 45-minute oratorio was lost by the end of the First World War and only turned up again much later, at a time not given in the notes (but a vocal and piano version was performed in the 1970s). Its twilight post-romanticism suggests Mahler but there are more modern parts that owe a debt to the non-serial Schoenberg and Berg and also to Zemlinski. The 11-minute Pastorale fantaisie of 1899 was Enescu’s response to calls for a new orchestral work after the immense success of his Poème roumaine of the year before. This required less preparation for this recording since the original manuscrpt survived along with the original orchestral parts. One Enescu premiere release that cpo didn’t get to first! Romanian-English texts. Rodica Vica (soprano), Tiberius Simu (tenor), Bogdan Baciu (baritone), Alin Anca (bass), RSO Berlin; Gabriel Bebeşelea.
