Description: An attractive 'composer portrait' of the various facets of Velázquez' output. Aside from his substantial body of concert music, he wrote extensively for film, and the orchestral suite is from music to a satirical comedy. Ridiculous slapstick circus music and parodies of Mexican popular styles rub shoulders with sentimentality for a riotous quarter-hour. The duo song cycle and earlier piano pieces are tonal, romantic and heavily influenced by folk styles, but the Abstracciones, a set of variations on a serial theme is harmonically thornier, though still approachable. The earlier Abalorios is a set of five pieces for quartet, also based on a limited series of pitches, but much more tonally harmonised, while 1989's Invenciones is structured with a controlled degree of freedom in performance, but is based on material that when combined according to the prescribed aleatoric principles produces a surprisingly consonant, tonal-sounding result.
