Description: Angulo’s “Voices of Nature” concerto (2011) is utterly winning, very approachable, brilliant orchestrated music in a style which one might call neo-Romantic-Impressionist, the soloist tripping along in first movement like a bird in flight while a song-like slow movement is followed by a rhythmic finale in the spirit of a son. If Ibert were Mexican, he could have written this delight. Gamboa is no less attractive, his single-movement concerto in seven sections evoking Mexican, French Impressionist and “Oriental” sounds in the first three, Stravinsky’s Rite animating a later one, all making excellent use of a large orchestra, only sections of which are ever used at one time and with many solo instrumental contributions (a really attractive short section uses just flute and mallet instruments). Miguel Ángel Villanueva (flute), Orquesta Sinfónica de la Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León; Jesús Medina. Private label. No catalogue number.
