Description: These quartets were commissioned as part of a multimedia - indeed, multidisciplinary - project to stimulate thoughts and emotions around the question of global climate change and environmental sustainability. As such, both are somewhat programmatic, structured to provide a kind of narrative centred on water and its essential connection to life. Kaminsky's four movements of Rising Tide progress from an abstract (rather atonal) desert landscape through which a post-minimalist stream runs, via a dissonant counterpoint of animal life and its more tonal, propulsive scurrying, to a chorale-based meditation on human society, which gradually becomes more disordered and complex. Larsen's Emergence is more consistently tonal, in five movements depicting the cycle of physical states of water, with distinct character that also act as metaphors for human emotions. Lively post-minimalist pulsations alternate with anguished melody and strained, strident, dissonant chords in a work of considerable emotional impact. Fry Street Quartet.
