Description: Mathias' very considerable choral output falls firmly in the tradition of tonal choral music in the British Isles. The pieces here range from the joyous carol sequence Ave Rex and the lively Magnificat to the tender, prayerful As truly as God is our Father and the Nunc dimittis. Standing somewhat apart are the relatively dissonant, dark and dramatic An Admonition to Rulers, more harmonically advanced and modern than the other pieces here, and the colorfully orchestrated Christmas sequence Salvator Mundi, which encompasses a wider range of emotional territory than the earlier Ave Rex. The distinguished All Thy Works and the gentle setting of The Lord's Prayer - the composer's first and last choral works (1961 and 1992 respectively) - here receive their premiere recordings. Texts included. St Albans Abbey Girls Choir, Lay Clerks of St Albans Cathedral Choir, Michael Papadopoulos (organ).
