HERMANN GOETZ (1840-1876): Piano Quartet in E, Op. 6, Piano Quintet in C Minor, Op. 16.

Description: Who, 20 years ago, would have thought that we’d have three recordings of these pieces by now (cpo in a two-disc set in 1996 and ASV in 2003)? The 1867 quartet is long (38 minutes here), flowing and lyrical while the more terse and compact quintet (with double bass and only one violin) of 1874 whose “fateful” key of C minor and sense of dramatic struggle seems to suggest the composer’s fight against the disease that would kill him less than two years later.
