Description: These diverse chamber works collectively form a portrait of the composer over the past three decades. All are to some extent informed by personal experiences, leading to a wide range of moods. Happy, hopeful pieces tend toward a very tonal vocabulary, with a neoclassical elegance and an indefinable 'Englishness'; darker episodes - most notably the personal tragedy that gave rise to the Wind Quintet - are marked by a more ambiguous, dissonant language. The composer employs the tension inherent in this harmonic dichotomy to great dramatic effect; Orfordness, a portrait of a beautiful, wild place with a sinister past as a military experimental location, juxtaposes the two moods in a vivid narrative. Elsewhere, celebratory and tribute pieces are lively dances or gently heartfelt melody. John Turner (recorder), Jonathan Fisher (piano) and other artists.
