Description: Most of these pieces were written for specific people or occasions, and give a sense of 'ferociously modernist composer at play'. Burroughsian cut-ups of American folk-fiddle or Hardanger fiddle music, transmogrified almost to unrecognisability rub shoulders with prepared and detuned keyboards and non-musical noisemakers. There is very little formidable complexicist music here, but a lot of humor (the 30-second 'Jive' is a hoot, and the indignities to which some transcribed Handel arias are subjected in Molly House just have to be heard ...) The Sonata also transmutes 'found' material in ways that recall episodes in A History of Photography, one minute faithfully recalling the original, the next, tumultuously fragmenting and redeveloping it. Darragh Morgan (violin, household appliances), Mary Dullea (piano, prepared piano), Michael Finnissy (prepared piano, harpsichord).
