KURT ATTERBERG (1887-1974): String Quartets Op. 11 and Op. 2/Op. 39, TURE RANGSTRÖM (1884-1947): String Quartet

Description: Atterberg only wrote two string quartets which he acknowledged (and two other works for the formation - a suite and a "variations and fugue") and they are both fairly early: the double-opus number has two outer movements written in 1909 and two inner ones from 1937 which don't hang together particularly but which each provide much attractive melody and compositional skill. The Op. 11 is from 1916 and has a strong personality which carries the listener along through its shorter, 18-minute, three-movement course; one finds out in the notes that there is much wit and irony in some of the themes it uses but only Atterberg knew it! Rangström's 1909 quartet is a single-movement piece of 13 minutes, highly episodic, changing identities every few minutes and full of personality and bold gestures; it carries the subtitle "Un notturno nella Maniera de. E.T.A. Hoffmann" although the reference is to fantasy in construction and not to early 18th century style. Stenhammar Quartet.
