Description: Composed in 1916, Koechlin's sonata was a response to the carnage of the First World War, retreating into the world of the imagination, its first three movements suggesting a luminous forest, the dance of fairies and elves and a nocturne while the finale, with its chimes and hieratic processional, seems to suggest the soul longing for a world beyond the real world. Many of Vierne's Preludes also come from a dark place (No. 7 is "Evocation of a Day of Anguish" and No. 10 is "On a Tomb") but these are pre-war (1914) and deal with the composer's personal demons but desolation and pain run throughout the 1917 quintet written in memory of his son who was killed in action. Tamara Atschba (piano), Louise Chisson, Matthias Adensamer (violins), Alexander Znamensky (viola), Christophe Pantillon (cello).
