Description: This hour-long piece in 36 segments dates from 1677 and was a wedding gift for the Empress of Austria. French suite with a mixture of French and Italian styles well in advance of Les goûts reunis, followed by a theme-and-19-variations on an old German theme which is partially filled with earthy characterizations of various parts of Europe, itself followed by several more pieces offering depictions of dance, nature and the song of the nighingale, this is a truly remarkable composition way ahead of its time. The recording was made in 1994 and is the only one available (more mystery). Joyce Lindorff (harpsichord).
