CARLO GIORGIO GAROFALO (1886-1962): Violin Concerto, Romantic Symphony.
Catalogue Number: 09M061
Description: Until its Moscow revival in 1994 (largely due to the efforts of the conductor on this recording), the Romantic Symphony had only been performed complete once - in St. Louis in 1915! In its size (40 minutes), thematic development, orchestration, musical architecture and melodic inventiveness (not to mention the waltz rhythms which steal in rather often), this work belongs more to the Viennese tradition than to the Italian. The concerto is in the late 19th century tradition as well although it is a little lighter in style than the symphony and might be said to be, therefore, more Italianate. Sergei Stadler (violin), New Moscow Symphony Orchestra; Joel Spiegelman. Original 2002 Marco Polo release.
