Description: How many of you remember that we offered a two-disc set of this composer’s Op. 24 Capricci on the Dynamic label back in 1998? I thought so. As you can see, these are archival Bulgarian Radio recordings and the Hristoskov and Vladigerov CD is over 76 minutes long. The Op. 1 Capricci are very conservative (no challenge to Bartók here), take up 42 minutes and their titles show their origins in Bulgarian folk music. The four-minute Rhapsody is rather more dissonant and spiky but the real prize is the single-movement, 18-minute sonata which is horror-film creepy and threatening and turns into a darkness-to-light journey or evil-overcome-by-good struggle. The Vladigerov is a bright and colorful addition to the discography of Bulgaria’s most famous composer. 2 CDs.
