BASIL POLEDOURIS (1945-2006): Film score of Conan the Barbarian transcribed for organ by Philipp Pelster [b.1984].
Catalogue Number: 08R081
Description: The claim is made in the notes that John Milius’ intention with the film was “to create an opera in the form of film” and that Poldouris’ score “supports the story line in a similar way to a work written for the stage”. Whatever you may make of that, this is a fun way to spend 64 minutes - even if you never saw the 1982 movie. The organ, from German and Californian builders was completed in 1998 and one of its builders says “it was desired that this organ would inspire creativity and innovation in compositions, performances and recordings.” It’s certainly a virtuoso transcription and performance on an instrument that can produce pretty much all the sounds of the orchestra. Philipp Pelster (Glatter-Götz/Rosales organ of United Church of Christ, Claremont, CA).
