Description: Feldman's limited output for violin and piano is mostly early, from the 1950s and early '60s, apart from the hour-and-a-quarter For John Cage (1982). The 1977 piece Spring of Chosroes explicitly refers to Feldman's preoccupation with the patterning in oriental rugs in the later part of his career, but the early pieces also seem to show the composer searching for the means to develop meaningful patterns from thread-like gestures - notes, mysterious chords - woven together in various ways. Projection IV is a graphic score; the Extensions pieces are precisely notated, seeming to present isolated sound events from the two instruments as lines on perpendicular axes, weaving patterns of subtle intricacy. In the earlier works, surprisingly large dynamic contrasts were still permissible; the characteristic subdued dynamics of the later pieces soon exert themselves. For John Cage is a shorter example of Feldman's late chamber works dedicated to friends and colleagues. In this work the patterning principle is taken to (literally) extreme lengths; small motifs are repeated, seldom exactly, constructing an extended tapestry from minimal material woven, as it were, from memory, with the element of indeterminacy that that implies, making the dedication to Cage especially fitting. 2 CDs. Andreas Seidel (violin), Steffen Schleiermacher (piano).
