Description: Meyer's sonatas are in a generally mainstream 20th-century style that will appeal to those who admire the music of Bartók and Shostakovich. Melodic line is important to the composer and he's especially interested in the singing capabilities of the cello - although this cello is a 20th century singer, not a neo-romantic one and its often long-breathed lyricism is joined with a powerful sense of drama in a predominantly tonal framework. The piano, an accompanist in the first sonata of 1983, is an equal in the second from 2004 (of which this is the world premiere recording). Emotionally involving and meticulously crafted, these works will appeal to anyone interested in the 20th-21st centuries' continuation of this traditional chamber music genre. Evva Mizerska (cello), Emma Abbate (piano), Katarzyna Glensk (piano - op. 99).
