LEONARDO BALADA (b.1933): Viola Concerto (World Premiere Recording), Concerto for Cello and 9 Players, Concerto for Piano, Winds and Percussion, Sonata for 10 Winds, Cumbres - A Short Symphony for Band.
Catalogue Number: 07R052
Description: The 16th Balada release on Naxos so, if you don’t know this composer by now, then you’re not buying him anyway! All are works for wind band with or without a string instrument soloist and only the 1962 cello concerto comes from his early, neo-classical style (written for Cassadò, it has some lovely lyrical moments for the soloist) and only the 1973 piano-winds-percussion concerto dates from Balada’s avant-garde period although it has enough spiky rhythmic material to fake you out. All the rest are of the “combo” style of avant-garde techniques cheek-by-jowl with folk or traditional elements and the 2009-10 viola concerto is a first recording. Enrique Graf (piano), David Premo (cello), Ashan Pillai (viola), Carnegie Mellon Wind Ensemble; Denis Colwell, Stephen Story, Thomas Thompson and George Vosburgh (conductors).
