Description: With roots in studies with major avant-garde luminaries of Europe (including Stockhausen, Xenakis, Halffter and Nono) but also by way of some early career diversions into rock music, Garrido has developed a highly individual style, very direct, even confrontational, in expression. Strident dissonances and clusters, often involving microtones for additional textural density, abound, alongside driving rhythmic ostinati and a sense of headlong forward motion, accentuated by incessant complex metrical changes. Beginning with dense textures and visceral, thrusting energy, Caminus develops surprising, spare iridescent textures in its later stages, and an unexpected, eloquent contrabass solo. The violin concerto develops along similar lines, beginning with outbursts of furious energy, from which the soloist emerges into the foreground as a vigorous, virtuosic protagonist. Neither orchestra nor soloist concedes any ground in the tense, kinetic dialogue that ensues. The flute concerto begins with intense, declamatory, violent statements from the orchestra, which the solo instrument emulates at its first entry. Soon, however, the flute's rôle is established, in a vividly projected portrayal of a series of stylized birdcalls, with the ensemble providing amorphous, organic background textures reminiscent of controlled aleatoric passages by Lutoslawski (to whom the work is dedicated). The 'Letters', a more recent work, consists of spare little vignettes, alternating harsh urgency and mysterious, intimate moments of consonant repose. David Martínez (violin), Julián Elvira (flute), Camerata del Prado; Tomás Garrido.
