Description: Here's a marathon project!: all 37 of Reicha's surviving string quartets, starting with eight written in Vienna in 1802-05. A new world will open up in front of you as you read the 16 pages of notes by an independent Reicha scholar and by the first violinist of the performing quartet. Reicha and Beethoven were friends from 1785 but the decade of 1800-1810 led to a renewal and intensification of their relationship and the first six of his Vienna quartets are plainly a response to Beethoven's Op. 18 while Beethoven's Op. 59 can be seen as a similar response to Reicha's seventh and eighth Vienna quartets. Mountains of information, most of it new even to the veteran collector and all of it fascinating, especially the quartet members' liberating sense of being in the presence of great music with absolutely no performing tradition. Kreutzer Quartet.
