JOHANN NEPOMUK HUMMEL (1778-1837): Mathilde von Guise, Op. 100.
Catalogue Number: 07M048
Label: Brilliant Classics
Description: World premiere recording. This is the only one of Hummel's eleven stage works to be performed with success and then only in its 1821 revision (originally it premiered in 1810). It's unusual in having only three arias and one romanza - the other twelve numbers are all ensembles. The style is closer to Cherubini, Weber or Rossini than to Mozart; the orchestra has double winds, four horns and trombone and Hummel's use of the winds is sometimes virtuosic - as are the roles of the two main characters. Period instruments. 2 CDs. No libretto. Kristine Gailite, Eva Susková (sopranos), Philippe Do, Ondrej Saling (tenors), Choir Alea, Solamente Naturali; Didier Talpain.
