Description: A 1989 live recording on the Ricordi label may be the only other CD appearance of this 1829 opera which was Donizetti’s first treatment of a Tudor queen (Elizabeth in this case). The fundamental pivot of the drama is the antagonism between the two female characters and the composer still has a slight Rossinian accent at this point in time. The live performance received excellent reviews, praising the richness of the costumes, the sobriety of the stage setting, and above all the vocal and acting skills of the whole cast. 2 CDs.
