AN-LUN HUANG (b.1949): Piano Trios No. 1 in D Minor, Op. 30 and No. 2 in B, Op. 83.
Catalogue Number: 06T062
Reference: 903 2065-6
Format: SACD hybrid
Description: As we suggested when welcoming the disc of Huang's piano music in April, the composer is an unabashed Romantic, an impression that these large trios, expertly written for the rewarding but tricky ensemble, do much to reinforce. Huang's idiom is tonal, and his use of form traditional, yet these works manage to sound fresh and original. The big, sweeping themes and vigorous allegro passages are firmly tonal, with more than a suggestion of Ravel (the elfin scherzo of No.2 is a hybrid of Le tombeau de Couperin and the String Quartet), while gentler, more reflective moments bring out reflections of the composer's Chinese origins in pentatonic melodies. Textures are invariably lucid and finely judged, even in the most harmonically rich and generous sections. Full-blooded, fulsomely expressive music, emotionally generous and instantly likeable. Bin Huang (violin), Alexander Suleiman (cello), Yubo Shou (piano).
