Description: This is a most attractive program of varied, thoroughly accessible music. Maslanka is justly celebrated for his big, bold, colorful scores for full wind orchestra; this quintet shares many of the characteristics that make his large scale pieces so memorable. Propulsive rhythms, with an almost minimalistic use of ostinato patterns occur throughout, alongside rich tonal harmony and striking instrumentation. The soulful middle movement draws on the Blues and American folksong. The Szeligowski is neoclassical, with a light, transparent, deft touch and more than a suggestion of Gallic elegance - he was a Boulanger pupil - reminiscent of Poulenc or Stravinsky. Say's piece is a genial portrayal of life in a Turkish village, with jaunty, 'exotic' modal themes that instantly identify the composer's country of origin, and a bucolic, pastoral atmosphere. Janssen's short piece is a study in shifting sonorities, its simple, open, ambiguous harmonies a by-product of its restrained washes of instrumental color. LutosAir Quintet.
