EMILIE MAYER (1812-1883): Piano Trios in D, Op. 16 and in B Minor, Op. 16, Notturno for Violin and Piano, Op. 48.

Description: Mayer studied composition under Carl Loewe from 1841-46 and stressed Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, the latter of whom is most evident in these two trios from the mid 1850s along with a Mendelssohnian lightnesss and brio which comes through in fast movements. The six-minute Notturno of 1883 is her last work and is fully in the Brahmsian romantic tradition. Mayer wrote at least eight piano trios (and eight symphonies, No. 5 of which we offered seven years ago - 07M001) and much other chamber music among her 94 compositions so we can hope for more at least of the latter from enterprising labels such as cpo.
