STÅLE KLEIBERG (b.1958): Mass for Modern Man for Soprano, Baritone, Chorus and Orchestra.
Catalogue Number: 06S012
Format: SACD hybrid
Description: Kleiberg's large-scale works, such as the symphony, concerti and opera we've offered previously (01G071, 08L009, 01O078) are sumptuously neo-romantic, employing a traditional but personal tonal vocabulary. This lushly romantic setting of the Mass is no exception, with its rich choral textures and orchestration. What makes it a Mass 'for Modern Man' is the interpolation of three movements setting English texts by Jessica Gordon, Kleiberg's librettist for his David and Bathsheba (01O078) which explore themes of tragedy, loss and doubt, the erosion of faith that afflicts the modern world. To contrast with the grandly, confidently assured and uplifting music of the Mass setting, these movements feature the soloists in a more intimate, directly emotional style, more that of a dramatic oratorio. As a Mass the work is impressive and moving, if relatively conventional; with the added dimension of the questioning, and ultimately the restoration, of faith in the face of tribulation, makes it all the more so. Mari Eriksmoen (soprano), Johannes Weisser (baritone), Trondheim Symphony Orchestra and Choir; Eivind Gullberg Jensen. SACD hybrid disc + Blu-ray audio disc.
