Description: The difference between the ?1820 F major concerto and its 1829 discmate is palpable from the first moments of the latter: Op. 214 exudes the heady air of early Romanticism while Op. 28 is still in the world of Mozart and Beethoven. The Rondo, perhaps from around 1831, delivers the crowd-pleasing goods like all of Czerny’s other Rondos brillants. Jeremy Nicholas sums up the disc perfectly in the last line of his booklet notes, “Czerny may not be the greatest melodist, but as a probing examiner of every aspect of the pianist’s skill he had few rivals.” Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra; Howard Shelley (piano).
