Description: The first major composition by this Chilean conductor is a 95-minute ballet set in Gold Rush California featuring the legendary bandit who became the source of the character Zorro. Domínguez’ intent was to work in the American film-score tradition of John Williams, Herrmann, Korngold, Steiner and Rózsa and he has succeeded 100%. You might think of Elmer Bernstein’s The Magnificent Seven also and there’s a drunken bad-guy scene with a ripely farting contrabassoon that’s pure Morricone. There’s a synopsis of the ballet’s action but the composer wanted this score to work as purely narrative music and he has succeeded just as perfectly there also. Fun for all and especially film-score buffs. 2 CDs. Santiago Philharmonic Orchestra; José LuÍs Domínguez.
