Description: The main work here is the unusually scored Concerto spirituale of 1943. Lasting 17 minutes, it sets a poem by the 13th century Jacopone da Todi. As rugged and austere as its source material, it uses two small instrumental groups - one of strings and one of brass and timpani - which, like the voices, sometimes are in unison and sometimes clashing in dissonance. The music, generally neo-classical in impulse, can shift from angelic to brutal in a split-second. Also of note, since he wrote such little piano music, is the 17-minute group of five piano pieces by Malipiero: Composizioni (1922) consists of Il tarlo ("The Woodworm") which contains four short sketches ranging from Impressionism to a vaguely threatening futurism, and A Claudio Debussy (on the composer's death), while the three Omaggi of 1920 are exercises in sarcasm ("To a Rooster", "To and Elephant" and "To an Idiot"). Italian texts. Alda Caiello, Lorna Windsor (sopranos), Orchestra I Pomeriggi Musicali; Antonio Ballista.
