Description: Chosen, as the pianist himself tells us, for their beauty, elegance, humor and spirituality and nationalism, these 73 minutes of music by the fount of Latvian art music are not all he had to offer but provide fine pictures of his faithful use of his native folksong - the 18-minute Variations of 1891, the longest piece here, is also the one which most transcends the music's folk origins - as well as showing examples of his mature style (most notably in the 1926 Sonatine whose rich romantic harmonies are in service of neo-classical elements). Reinis Zarins (piano).
