Description: Organist, pianist, conductor and teacher, Nixon was a lifelong devotee of the music of Mendelssohn and Spohr and his 1879 trio - a more than substantial work in four movements and lasting just under 48 minutes (you might call it of Schubertian "heavenly length") - has similar qualities of melodic richness and early Romantic style (but the andante uses an Anglican hymn at its beginning - an unusual touch), for all that the period when it was written was "late Brahms" time. The best compliment might be to say that the work seemed half as long as it actually was upon first listening. London Piano Trio.
