Description: World Premiere Recording of the 1834 symphony whose subtitle reference is explained as "Characteristic of the Polish Spirit"; this was a work conceived in the aftermath of the failed 1830 Uprising and Dobrzynski pointedly linked each movement to a Polish dance: polonaise, kujawiak, mazurka and krakowiak. This is a powerful, urgent and impassioned symphony, recorded with the dynamic range and reverb of early Chandos discs and conducted like Toscanini with his hair on fire. The 11-minute overture to an 1836-38 opera is another orchestral spectacular, full of dynamic life and interesting orchestration. NOTE: For those of you who collect piano concertos: this is not the same version of Dobrzynski's concerto which appeared on Frederic Chopin Institute last May (04N004). This one goes back to the original manuscript and restores several cuts made by the composer and totals 40 minutes - seven minutes longer than the other edition. 2 CDs for the price of 1. Emilian Madey (piano), Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra; Lukasz Borowicz.
