Description: "Seven Steps of Life" was one of Burkhard's last works, written when he was already ill, and is a retrospective account in music of his own life, incorporates the song of a nightingale that he had transcribed in 1945. Schaeuble's ballet (1958) is a fine work in the school of Hindemith.
